Closure of Wembdon Rise – 31st October – reminder

The section of Wembdon Rise between Orchard Lane and Inwood Road will be closed next Tuesday, 31st October 2023. The closure will start at 09:30 and will last until 15:30 at the latest, to allow Openreach to replace a telegraph pole.

Residents in the affected section should still be able to access their properties.

Fire and Rescue Service Consultation

Every year The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service asks their communities and businesses about the level of council tax contribution for the fire and rescue service. This consultation is open now until midday on 30 November.

They say “We would like to hear from as many people as possible across Devon and Somerset to better understand our residents’ views. Please can you complete the online survey and share this with your networks. Should you or anyone else be unable to complete this online please call 01392 872354 and leave a message with your name and number.”

Temporary traffic lights on Wembdon Rise 17th to 19th October

We have just heard that there will be temporary three-way traffic lights from 8:00 am on Tuesday 17th to 6:15 pm on Thursday 19th October on Wembdon Rise, near Orchard Lane. This is to allow Openreach to carry out “Utility Asset Works”. A pedestrian walkway will be provided through the works.

It is not clear whether the temporary lights will replace the fixed traffic lights at the Wembdon Rise / Homburg Way junction, or whether they will be in addition to them.

Bridgwater Town Deal open event – 19th October

Somerset Council, in conjunction with the Bridgwater Town Board, are organising a Town Deal Open Event where people can find out information on the investment coming to Bridgwater through the Towns Fund Scheme.

They say “Join us at the Bridgwater Town Deal Open Event to learn about the 11 projects that will benefit from a combined £23.2m government investment in Bridgwater. The Bridgwater Town Deal will re-energise the area and support our local community by creating a vibrant and welcoming town centre. It aims to boost sustainability, accessibility and opportunities – all within the next 2 1⁄2 years.

“Come along to the Town Hall Theatre on 19th October to find out more, meet the project teams, ask questions and share your thoughts!”

The Town Deal Open Event will be held on Thursday 19th October in Bridgwater Town Hall theatre between 2.00pm and 7.00pm.

Tenders invited for Parish Council maintenance contract

Wembdon Parish Council invites tenders for its grass and vegetation maintenance contract for a three year period commencing January 2024.  Applications must be received by 5pm on 10th November 2023.

By now, most households in Wembdon will have received a copy of the September Parish Paper. If yours hasn’t been delivered yet, be assured it is on its way.

As usual, there will be some spare copies available at Wembdon Village Hall, the Parish Centre, and the Cottage Inn. Or you can read it online.

Closure of Blakes Road 27th & 28th September – a reminder

The section of Blakes Road from its junction with Church Road to the corner by numbers 3 and 12 will be closed on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th September while Jurassic Fibre carry out remedial work.

Jurassic Fibre have put out advance warning signs which imply that Church Road will also be closed, from Crossfield Close to Blakes Road. Although the temporary traffic order for the closure permits this, it is our understanding that Church Road will not actually be closed.

Temporary traffic lights on Wembdon Rise 21st and 22nd September

We have just heard that there will be temporary traffic lights on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd September on Wembdon Rise, outside number 32. This will allow contractors to carry out work on a tree. The footway on one side of the road will also be closed.

One of the best playing fields in Somerset

At an awards ceremony last Friday, Somerset Playing Fields Association announced the results of its annual competition for the best playing fields in Somerset. Wembdon was honoured by the award of second prize in the Large Fields section.

Pictured with Mark Phillips (left), the Parish Council’s representative on the Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust, are Dan Bingham (centre), who maintains the playing fields for the Trust, and Steve Bull, who looks after the remainder of the field for the Parish Council.

Mark was presented with a certificate and a cheque for £50 for the Parish Council by Chris Davies CBE, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset.

The full results for the Large Fields section were:
1st: Trull Parish Council – King George V Field, Church Road
2nd: Wembdon Parish Council – Homberg Way Playing Field
3rd=: Wiveliscombe – War Memorial Recreation Ground, West Road
3rd=: Lympsham Parish Council – Lympsham Village Green and Cricket Field
