Our Parish Councillors have started to deliver the new edition of the Parish Paper to all the households in Wembdon. If you haven’t already received yours yet, it should be dropping through your letterbox in the next few days.

If you think you should have a copy, and haven’t received it by 10th August, please contact our clerk with your name, address and phone number, and he will sort it out for you.

As usual, there will be some spare copies available at Wembdon Village Hall, the Parish Centre, the Cottage Inn and Greenway Garage. Or you can read it online.

Overnight closures of A39 2nd – 6th August

We have been told by Somerset Council that A39 Quantock Road will be closed from a point east of Skimmerton Lane to Sandford Roundabout overnight from 19:00 to 06:00. The closure will start on 2nd August and will last up to 4 nights. The closure is for “prep works, surface dressing and associated works”. The extent of the closure can be seen in the first map on the left. The closed section is shown in red; you can click on the map to expand it.
For any further information about this closure please contact Somerset Highways on 0300 123 2224 quoting reference: SM11/0524 – SD007744.

On the same nights, for the same time period, A39 New Road and Main Road will be closed between a point to the east of Blackmore Lane to the Cannington roundabout – see the second map.

The effect of these closures will be that there will be no direct access from Wembdon to Cannington and beyond, and access to Perry Green will be through Wembdon. The A39 traffic will not be diverted through Wembdon.

A signed diversion route will be in place, taking westbound traffic via the A38, Priorswood, and the A358, and eastbound in the reverse direction.

Bus passenger feedback survey

A single-deck somerset bus

Somerset Bus Partnership would like to collect your opinions about the buses in Somerset, how they can be improved, and the major issues affecting your use of the bus. They will use the results of the online survey to help influence the future bus network in Somerset by sharing them with the media, bus operators, and Somerset Council. Your personal details including your name and email address will be kept confidential.

About Somerset Bus Partnership

Somerset Bus Partnership represents bus users.

They say “The Somerset Bus Partnership is recognised by Somerset Council and by both Buses of Somerset and First West of England as the organisation that represents bus users across Somerset.

“We support 12 Bus User Groups across Somerset, have over 150 local bus champions and run some 80 events a year in towns and villages across Somerset providing information about local bus services.

“Somerset Bus Partnership attends Somerset Council’s Bus Advisory Board. We also hold the Chair and Vice Chair of the Council’s Bus Users and Stakeholders Group where we set the agenda. Both these Boards meet quarterly.

“So in our meetings, we talk about what bus users want and explore if and how that can work financially for the bus operator, if it can, then they will action our suggestions. As examples, recently they have agreed to serve Yeovilton via the 54 and soon in Frome they will start to serve Commerce Park.”

Proposed traffic restrictions on A39 Quantock Road

Extent of 30mph speed limit extension
location of restriction of U-turns
location of restriction of right turns

Somerset Council have published two proposals for Traffic Restriction Orders (TROs) on the A39 next to the West Bridgwater housing developments. Both are subject to a period of public consultation, from 16 July to 5 August 2024. The effects of these TROs would be to:

  • extend the existing 30mph speed limit westwards by 510 metres (reference ET10062024)
  • prohibit U-turns at the light-controlled junction providing access to the housing developments (reference ET04062024)
  • prohibit right turns onto the A39 from the secondary access to the Cokerhurst Farm development (reference ET04062024)

The official notices (in the form of PDF documents) can be viewed by following the links from the reference numbers above. The lengths of road affected are shown in the plans on the left (click to open an enlarged version in a new window).

Any person wishing to make representations or to object to the proposed TRO(s) should send a statement in writing of their representations or objection and state the grounds on which it is made to Somerset Council, via email to TROinbox@somerset.gov.uk quoting the relevant reference number, before 5th August.

    Volunteers required

Would you like to help the people in the parish? If so, volunteers are required to join the Wembdon Parish Council Flood Action Group.

The Parish of Wembdon has several areas that, during times of wet weather, are subject to flooding. This could be due to overflowing ditches (rhynes), or rivers, brooks and streams bursting their banks, or even something specific to actual dwellings.

Firstly, the group needs volunteers to be able to give a very quick assessment of the problem and refer it on to the necessary people who will hopefully rectify the issues.

Secondly, if there is need to evacuate people to a safe place, the same volunteers would also be needed to help at the site, ensuring that people are safe and well looked after whilst the problem persists.

If you feel you could help in any way, please contact Councillor Paul King on 07564 955964 who will endeavour to answer your questions.

    Reporting road surface problems

    Typical road surface damage

County Councillor Mike Caswell has asked us to remind you that road surface problems, including potholes, should be reported directly to Somerset Council. You should do so by using the Report a Problem on the Road page on Somerset’s website. This link can also be found on the home page of our website, together with links to other Somerset services.

The more reports that are received about an issue the more likely it is that action will be taken.

    Defibrilator training

    Defibrilator logo

Wembdon Parish Council have organised another training session in the use of defibrilators, provided by the South Western Ambulance Service. This will take place on Thursday 11th July at 6pm in the Parish Centre, Church Road.

Everybody is welcome to come – no booking needed – just turn up. No previous knowledge is needed, but if you have been to a previous training session, this will be a chance for a refresher.

There are three defibrilators in Wembdon Village: outside the Parish Centre, outside the Cottage Inn, and outside the Village Hall.
