Wembdon Community Youth Project update 2nd December 2021

  • We have now received a total of £106,278 in grants, including a recent £15,000 grant from Sedgemoor District Council which will enable us to include extra ventilation and air-conditioning in the room.
  • The costs of the project have increased due to the very steep rise in the cost of building materials.
  • After delays caused by difficulties in procuring materials a large quantity of timber and other materials has been delivered to the site and we have secured plasterboard, plumbing for the underfloor heating and other materials which are at the builders merchants awaiting delivery. We are very grateful to Travis Perkins for the donation of substantial amounts of free materials.
  • Students and their mentors from Volunteer It Yourself started work on the stud walls and ceilings on 29th November and are making good progress.
  • Bridgwater and Taunton College students are designing a wiring plan and will work on the installation of the electrics. A volunteer electrician, Andy Dale will supervise the electrical work and sign it off when it is finished.
  • The detailed architects’ drawings have been completed and we are liaising with Sedgemoor Building Control.
  • We have ordered a platform lift from Stannah. Final designs are nearing completion and installation is due in February.
  • When the building work is completed we have three volunteers who have said they would be willing to supervise the young people in the youth space and ‘Young Somerset’ would like to run supervised youth sessions in our facility.
  • The room will also be available in the daytime for community activities and for hire for meetings, conferences etc. The latter will provide income to fund the youth activities. The cricket and football clubs will be able to use the room at weekends.
