Scouts

Wembdon has a very active Scout Group, incorporating a Beaver Scout Colony (ages 6-8), a Cub Scout Pack (ages 8-10½) and a Scout Troop (ages 10½-14).  Each of these Sections has its own experienced leadership team operating under a single Executive Committee, and we currently have around 70 young members in total.  We are part of Sedgemoor Scouting District, and our young people can continue their Scouting career beyond the age of 14 by joining Sedgemoor Explorer Scouts and perhaps becoming a Young Leader.
The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have their own weekly evening meetings during term time, based at Wembdon Parish Centre.  However, we like to get out and about as much as possible and to take advantage of the local countryside with hikes, camping and other adventurous outdoor activities.  Even our youngest members have opportunities for “nights away” at indoor camping centres such as the Campbell Room near Over Stowey, and it is not unusual for our Scouts to complete well over 100 nights of camping during their time with us – in the UK and beyond!  We also attend District and County events and in September we have a family camp so that Mum, Dad and the rest of the family can join in the fun.
Scouting is open to both girls and boys, and offers a balanced activity programme designed to engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.   Modern Scouts may be more likely to navigate using GPS than a compass, but they still uphold many of the Scouting traditions, including singing silly songs around the camp fire and toasting marshmallows!   And, of course, there are loads and loads of badges and awards to choose from and to work towards.
If your son or daughter likes being active, doing new things and making new friends, please give me a call or email me and I will give you further details and put you in touch with the appropriate Section Leader.  Even if he or she is too young to join us yet, we can place him or her on our waiting list.  Also, if you are an adult and are interested in joining us as a volunteer I would be pleased to hear from you too.
