Quantock Road (Whitegates) Roundabout Scheme

Work is due to start on Monday 4th November on changes to the existing roundabout on the A39. The main elements of the scheme are:

  • provide light-controlled pedestrian / cycle (toucan) crossings across Homberg Way and Quantock Road (east)
  • provide an additional lane and improved visibility for traffic from Quantock Road (west)
  • remove the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing from Quantock Road (west)
  • create a pedestrian / cycle path between the roundabout and Alfoxton Way

In their press release dated 10th October describing the scheme, Somerset County Council said “The scheme will be constructed to ensure traffic can flow freely and will avoid temporary traffic lights. Some overnight closures and traffic lights will be required towards the end of the works to complete the scheme.” However, at the drop-in session held on 22nd October at Wembdon Parish Centre, we were told that there will be times during the 21-week construction period when the Homberg Way approach to the roundabout will be reduced to a single lane. We were also told that they had examined ways of improving the Quantock Road / Danesboro Road junction, but that no improvements were possible, due to the presence of an electrical substation and the closeness of private houses.
